Waste to Profit – A long-term commitment to sustainability and empowerment
Axjo Group AB, together with Axjo America Inc. and Reelab AB, has entered a long-term partnership with Hand in Hand Sweden to support Waste to Profit – a three-year initiative promoting sustainable waste management and women’s entrepreneurship along the coast of Kenya.
The project focuses on developing local circular economies by improving waste-handling processes, creating thousands of jobs, and empowering women to become business owners in the recycling sector.
“We are proud to support this transformative initiative. Contributing to sustainable systems while strengthening local communities aligns perfectly with our values. Through this partnership, we want to help more people access education, healthcare, and dignified work”, says Jacob Nilsson, CEO of Axjo Group AB.

Local Impact – Global Responsibility
The Waste to Profit project is based in Mombasa and Kilifi County in Kenya – regions facing major challenges around waste pollution and poverty. By providing tools, training, and community support, the initiative creates a long-term impact for individuals and their families.
Two of the entrepreneurs in the program, Mariam and Sadiki, illustrate the daily reality and potential of the project.
• Mariam leads a group of 14 waste collectors. She works mornings when she feels healthy, and dreams of owning a scale to improve her small backyard recycling business.
• Sadiki runs a recycling enterprise with five employees. His team works seven days a week collecting, sorting, and crushing plastic and glass materials for resale.

Reflections from the Field

“Kenya was an experience I will never forget – filled with warmth but also deep sorrow. Despite the poverty and tough conditions, especially for the children, I was constantly met with joy and kindness. The curious and happy children truly touched my heart.”
