As the first manufacturer of packaging for the cable industry, Axjo takes the step of using a large part of recycled, cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) from power cables in their cable drums.

Swedish company Axjo part of revolutionary break-through for the plastic industry. As the first manufacturer of packaging for the cable industry, Axjo takes the step of using a large part of recycled, cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) from power cables in their cable drums. Power cables are the backbone of the global electricity grids, that are crucial for the transition to renewable energy. The focus on sustainability in the power cable industry is constantly increasing. Axjo is one of the largest manufacturers of packaging for the cable industry focusing on products in 100% recycled materials. During the last two years they have, together with NKT, Borealis and Swerea IVF, designed a process in which cross-linked XLPE has been regenerated in new cable drums.

”Since 2003, Axjo has been producing cable drums in recycled materials, but over the past 5 years we have invested very large resources on its own production of customized materials for our customers,” says Jacob Nilsson, President and CEO of Axjo. “Being able to take advantage of residual production scrap together with NKT, which would otherwise have become waste, is the next step in our strategy. The products already have a very good life cycle analysis but being able to recycle XLPE gives both an economic saving and a CO2 reduction with about 2 tons of CO2 per ton of recycled XLPE. In 2019, Axjo has developed a new matrix for the company’s products under the ”Greenology” concept, where they help their customers find the right packaging products with focus on quality, product area and environmental impact. When choosing a transport-optimized packaging, with up to 50% lower weight and manufactured in 100% recycled materials, customers have the opportunity to make a big environmental gain in their operations. During 2020, Axjo Group will present their new Greenology concept, that shows how the latest product development platform gives customers advantages through so-called closed loop recycling, circular economy and mono material design. Axjo will also present how customers can recycle their cable drums using the sister company Drumsters own app. Axjo Group consumes over 15,000 tons of recycled plastic annually when producing more than 14 million reels and drums worldwide, and the company aims to be completely CO2 neutral as early as 2020.
